Manchester City continue to fly in the face of the credit crunch and have just splashed out £16million to tempt Arsenal central defender Kolo Toure to Eastlands. In stark contrast, despite having recently deposited £40 million in the bank from recent player sales, Arsene Wenger has gone on record to say he is no hurry to spend it. Given Arsenal's lack of silverware in recent years and their poor defensive record, is this prudence or madness?
Like Adebayor, Toure had been unhappy at the Emirates for a while. He failed last season to secure a regular place in the starting line up for the Gooners and had handed in a transfer request in January. As with Adebayor, Wenger obviously felt it was better to get the cash rather than rely upon demotivated players to put in good enough performances. Most Gooners would agree with him on that one, but must also be asking why Wenger isn't buying anyone.
To date Wenger has made only one summer signing so far, Thomas Vermaelen from Ajax for £10m. The Arsenal manager also put in a bid for Felipe Melo from Fiorentina, however the Brazilian midfielder chose to sign for Juventus instead. Arsenal have also been linked with a number of players including defenders Brede Hangeland of Fulham and Newcastle's Sebastien Bassong and strikers Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of Real Madrid and Bordeaux's Marouane Chamakh; however to date none of these rumours have come to fruition.
Rumours alone will not be enough to satisfy the Arsenal faithful; however Wenger has been quick to point out that buying new players isn't the answer to every problem. Certainly Arsenal have done relatively well and finished in the top 4 in the past few seasons following Wenger's favourite policy of nurturing young talent. Arsenal fans are however desperate for silverware and most would argue that for Arsenal, a club which is undeniably strong up front but weak defensively, buying a couple of brutes for back line is surely worth a try. There was a reason why Arsenal did so well when Keown and Adams bossed the back!
The Arsenal fans might however understand Wenger's dilemma if they were to take a close look at Arsenal's finances. Unfortunately Arsenal expected to raise big sums by re-developing Highbury into luxury flats, but given the recent property slump this venture might ultimately plunge them into more debt. Given this consideration their directors have recommended that Arsenal's gross average annual spend on new players should not exceed £18m, which is less than half of what the rest of the big 4 can afford and a lot less than Man City have put up in the current transfer window. A recent financial report on Arsenal certainly makes sober reading.
One thing that might lift the Emirates from the gloom of their recent lack of trophies and big name signings is the possibility of the return of Patrick Vieira. Watch this space ..

Everton will score on Lescott BIG TIME
If you were a selling club to the richest club in the world this summer, you would hope to do the last big deal. Reputation and speculation add millions to these signings. Does Moyes want to create an issue for himself in defence? Probably not but if he can push Manchester City up to £20-25m for England international Joleon Lescott then selling is usually the inevitable outcome.
Will this signing push Man City in to the top 4? Top 6, yes - but ask yourself this...which out of the new signings would play regular football week in week out for Manchester United or Chelsea?

Peter Crouch signed at Spurs...Harry loves a deal
Tottenham Hotspur have signed in on 28 year old striker Peter Crouch in a deal worth approximately £10m.
Crouch has completed his medical and personal terms with Spurs and will be in a lily white Jersey next month.
Redknapp is a very open Premier League manager and has been praising the England front man for being a great player at the highest level. Crouch hit 16 goals last season and in my view is a great acquisition for Spurs.
Crouch and Defoe hit it off last season at Pompey, Redknapp will be reuniting the 2 strikers and Portsmouth have financial issues leading them to sell some of their best assets.
Apparently Harry Redknapp will also be happy to sell Darren Bent, who has been linked with Sunderland for £10-12m so watch this space for more Premier League transfer information.

Sven's "return to the Premiership"
So what attracted Sven-Goran Eriksson to work for a club owned by billionaires?
In a twist more bizarre than Owen joining Manchester United, on 22 July Notts County, now owned by Munton Finance Limited, unveiled the former Goeteborg, Benfica, Roma, Sampdoria, Lazio, England, Man City and Mexico manager as their new Director of Football. Although Notts County have an impressive footballing pedigree as the world's oldest professional team, they are currently languishing in the second division and have not seen top flight football since 1992. However although Notts County are a world away from most of the other teams Sven has managed, Sven does have some experience with lower league teams, having started his career with the lowly Swedish team Degerfors and winning them promotion.
Sven-Goran Eriksson has insisted he can repeat this feat with Notts County and has signed a five-year deal to earn the three promotions required to take them from League Two to the Premier League . "It is the biggest football challenge of my life to take Notts County to the Premier League," said the Swede."I could have gone elsewhere and earned more but I'm here for the challenge."
Sven had very recently been linked with the Portsmouth job. There had also been rumours that he was lined up as a replacement for Wenger should this season see another trophyless year for the Gooners. Sven admits that he always wanted to come back to the Premiership "because it is the best League in the world," and in his own words, he has simply " ..chosen a little bit more of a difficult way to do it."
Sven will be assisted by Tord Grip, who will take up the work alongside current manager Ian McParland
So in answer to the question of what attracted Sven-Goran Eriksson to work for a club owned by billionaires, clearly the answer is the challenge! I wonder how many other top flight managers feel the same way - could we see Mourinho move to Cheltenham Town or Keegan return from the golf course to manage Hereford? For the cynics amongst us who think the appeal of such challenges depend upon the ability of their clubs to offer multi million pound salaries, surely it's worth a punt anyway. What odds would you have got last week for Sven going to Notts County??
One thing's a sure bet however. The players of Notts County are currently working extra hard at training to make give them a fighting chance of being Premiership fit and ready! They must be bricking it!!

Will Beckham return to the Premiership?
David Beckham is currently back with LA Galaxy after a 5 month loan with AC Milan. However despite Beckham putting in an impressive display during his first appearance for the LA team this season, playing a cross-field ball with pinpoint accuracy to set up his team mates for the first goal and kicking an equally well targeted corner to set up the second goal for the 2:2 draw against AC Milan in a showpiece friendly on 19th July, Beckham's popularity with US football fans remains low. He was booed by a significant section of the crowd, who understandably feel Beckham's desire to stay in Italy for the first half the US season demonstrates a lack of commitment to the Galaxy.
Will Beckham therefore choose to leave the US and if so, where will he go? When the former England captain and most capped English outfield player left Manchester United in 2003, he stated that he would not return to the Premiership. However his ambitions to represent England in South Africa mean that lining up against his beloved Manchester United in the domestic competition is an option he has to consider. The England Manager Fabio Capello has already suggested that playing at European level would significantly boost Beckham's chances of making the England World Cup squad and although Beckham is keen to return to the San Siro, he is not ruling out Premiership clubs, saying: "I will do everything possible. I'll always regret it if I didn't do everything to give myself a chance to be involved in that [England's World Cup Squad]".
Beckham has a five-year Major League Soccer contract which began in 2007 and despite the negative reactions from the Galaxy fans, Beckham has re-iterated his commitment to the club and desire to see out this contract (and given its rumoured value of $250 million, who can blame him?). However this contract allows for him to spend the off-season on loan at a European club. A return to Serie A seems his more likely move, but there are also rumours of a move to Chelsea this winter after under new Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti, who was Milan coach during the Beckham's time in Italy. Tottenham and Manchester City are also whispered to be interested in Becks.
Six years ago it would have been unthinkable that we'd see Beckham in a City jersey, but football is a funny old game. Who would have thought even 2 years ago that City would be bankrolled by billionaires? Who would have thought 2 months ago that Michael Owen would be turning out next season for Manchester United?
Whatever the future holds for David Beckham, the guy has played for Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan and also managed to negotiate himself a multi million pound deal which allows him to spend the winter in California. This is a hell of a CV and a retirement plan for a man some claim is stupid!!

Villa link with Jermaine Jenas
After a shock link with Mourinho's Inter in the last transfer window, the special one has been reportedly expressing an interest in the midfielder again. However Martin O'Neill is now apparently considering a £10m bid for the Spurs midfielder and at this price Harry Redknapp must just be tempted to realise the ex-Newcastle United player.

Adebayor moves to Manchester City
Manchester City are having a thrilling transfer window with exciting, attacking signings to strengthen their 2009/2010 Premier League campaign.
Adebayor and Tevez could be great upfront for City....now they need some world class defenders. They've got the funds!

Adebayor to Manchester: City or United
I said this before but when you hear ex-footballers moan and groan it really irritates me. Why do footballers get criticised when they look for the best money deal about? Their careers in the majority are short as only a select few go on to coaching at any type of professional level.
Last season, Adebayor was interested in a move to Real from a cash point of view but decided to stay with the Gunners for another season. The Arsenal faithful moan about his work rate and overall contribution but surely have to observe that Adebayor on form has pushed Arsenal on in the striking department.
Along come rich boys Manchester City bidding on any European player even hinting at looking for a new club, however seemingly in this case Mark Hughes has really started the ball rolling with going to Wenger about Adebayor.
Now Adebayor has allegedly been offered to Manchester United. From a relatively unknown source, I have been told that Alex Ferguson has one more signing up his sleeve and that the deal has been done already for around £11m. We shall see, but some of the rumours are that Adebayor is stalling because he wants to play in a more established team.
Good luck to Manchester City. Before any fans criticise them, they should think about the big clubs who created the gap between them and the small clubs. Then of course there's Chelsea, who have gone through being hated but are now perceived as a genuine big club.
So who is Fergie going to sign because his claim that he has finished in the market was surely a bit of politics either to get his target's price down and/or to show confidence in his existing squad?

A Great Summer to be a Man City fan
It looks likely that by the time this blog is published, Emmanuel Adebayor will have joined the impressive list of Manchester City signings , adding his name to an already formidable strike force including Craig Bellamy, Roque Santa Cruz, Benjani, Ched Evans, Felipe Caicedo, Valeri Bojinov, Robinho and Tevez.
In Adebayor, City will be buying a player who has scored 62 goals in 142 appearances for Arsenal since he joined the Gunners from Monaco for £7m, although Arsenal fans would claim that too few of these goals came in the 2008/9 season due to a lack of commitment from the Togo international. Mark Hughes, admired by many as a player and a manager, must believe he will be able to motivate Adebayor and succeed where a fellow esteemed veteran of the management game, Arsene Wenger, appears to have failed in recent months.
This will of course be just one of the challenges facing Mark Hughes this season. Despite being armed with a team sheet and a pot of money that most managers can only dream of, Hughes will have to deal with the pressure of the high expectations of the club’s billionaire owners and of the fans. Meeting their expectations will not be easy as a group of brilliant individual players does not necessarily gel as a successful team immediately. Hughes will also have to deal with any fallout from players who do not make the starting eleven regularly, which is particularly difficult when these players will be extremely wealthy young men, who do not need to work beyond their football careers and will almost certainly be prone to bouts of petulance and egotism.
Will the Blues fans have the patience, if required, to wait for trophies from their team? I hope so, because none of them will want to follow the path that the other wealthy team of Blues took after they sacked Mourinho.
However even as I write this piece about all the pitfalls that may lie ahead for Hughes and City, I can not deny that it’s a great time to be a city fan. Like most football fans out there I’d love a group of billionaires to throw money at my club and put together a team like Hughes is putting together. If City can break into the top four, the most exciting league in the world will become that little more exciting, and this will give hope to all fans of teams lingering in mid-table mediocrity that every dog really does have its day.

Alonso to Madrid - Good business?
Xabi Alonso by many was a top 5 Premier League midfielder last season, forming a great partnership with Mascherano in the engine room of Liverpool's team. So now he reportedly wants to play at the Bernabeu next season alongside 'galacticos' such as Kaka and Ronaldo and Benitez is holding out for top dollar. Shades of Daniel Levy holding on to Berbatov and losing sight on what is important - your starting eleven on day one of the football season. The Reds have a great chance to put more pressure on Man Utd....why sell one of your key men, is this good business fellow football bloggers?
Portsmouth want Chimbonda
Pompey have expressed an interest in Tottenham Hotspur right back Pascal Chimbonda after an eventful 2008/2009 season for the Frenchman. Chim started off the season at the Stadium of Light but Roy Keane didn't fancy him so Harry Redknapp snapped him back up for the lily whites. Apparently he took a pay cut moving back to Tottenham, now he is playing down a rumoured £2.5m move but you can imagine this one happening, perhaps in a deal to get Crouchy to the lane.

Tottenham link : Kenwyne Jones
As previously reported at Football News Latest, Spurs are being their usual stubborn selves with Sunderland by insisting on charging them a premium for Darren Bent. However now this fee has been negotiated down to £10-12m Harry sounds like he might be looking for something more like a swap deal, as Spurs have expressed a big interest historically and in recent weeks on the impressive Sunderland forward Kenwyne Jones.
Harry Redknapp in typical fashion has been linked with many other players - Peter Crouch (Portsmouth), Craig Bellamy (Manchester City) and John Carew (Aston Villa). Potentially a difficult pre-season signings wise for the Tottenham with the impact of Real Madrid and Manchester City on the European football transfer market.

Robbie Keane football gossip
Spurs journeyman Robbie Keane is linked now with interest from Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neil. After an awkward U-turn on his move from Spurs to Liverpool this interest will be flattering to the Irish striker, but I reckon Harry will want to keep hold of Keane as opposed to create another problem as Tottenham did last pre-season by selling him then.
Alvaro Negredo Football Gossip
Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool are both eyeing up striker Alvaro Negredo from Almeria. Last season Negredo racked up 19 goals in 34 appearances in La Liga.

Michael Owen : Manchester United link
Much has been said about th ex England striker Michael Owen - he gets paid too much, he's not good enough for the Premier League but his goal scoring record speaks for itself. The team that sign Owen will go for a performance related pay based on appearances and goals.
Will it be Sir Alex and Man Utd that take a punt and benefit from all of that experience and natural goalscoring ability?
